Scope of Work & What's Included

Our approach to split rail fence in Gridley and surrounding counties covers every detail from initial property measurement and underground utility clearance through laser alignment and site cleanup:

Pasture and yard perimeter layout, property line confirmation, and Kansas 811 utility markings
Hydraulic post hole augering 36 to 42 inches deep below the winter frost line
Setting heavy pre-routed line, corner, and end posts in bell-bottom concrete or compacted gravel
Installing hand-hewn Western Red Cedar or treated southern yellow pine tapered rails
Fastening black vinyl-coated or galvanized 2x4 welded wire mesh drum-tight with barbed staples
Fabricating custom rustic cross-buck wood walk gates with heavy black strap hinges

Kansas Ground & Weather Considerations

Acreages, hobby farms, and rural subdivisions across Coffey County often desire an open, scenic boundary that defines property lines without blocking beautiful Flint Hills views. However, poorly installed split rail fences frequently lean when posts are set shallow in wet clay soils, causing rails to slip out of post holes and drop to the ground. Furthermore, standard split rail fences leave wide open gaps where dogs run loose, rabbits enter garden beds, or calves step through. Untreated pine also rots quickly at ground level under Kansas precipitation. We resolve these issues with rot-resistant cedar timbers, deep frost-depth post settings, and nearly invisible black wire mesh backing.

Our Proven Installation & Build Process

1
1. Boundary & Elevation Staking: Setting line strings along property edges and coordinating Kansas 811 locates.
2
2. Deep Hydraulic Boring: Augering 36 to 42 inch post holes on exact 10-foot rail centers.
3
3. Heavy Post Anchoring: Sinking heavy routed cedar or treated posts in bell-bottom concrete or tamped crushed rock.
4
4. Tapered Rail Insertion: Interlocking hand-hewn rails into pre-routed post slots for a seamless rustic run.
5
5. Wire Mesh Backing: Stretching 14-gauge black vinyl-coated welded wire mesh across the interior face.
6
6. Gate Hanging & Site Cleanup: Installing matching split rail cross-buck gates and running magnetic nail sweeps.

Cost Factors & Pricing

Split rail fence costs in Gridley and Burlington depend on the number of horizontal rails (2-rail decorative vs. 3-rail standard vs. 4-rail livestock), timber species (pressure-treated pine vs. premium Western Red Cedar), and whether wire mesh backing is added for pet containment. Rocky Flint Hills soil requiring hydraulic auger tooth bits and custom rustic gates also shape final project pricing. We provide clear, itemized quotes.

Permits & Utility Locates

Split rail fence installations comply with Coffey County setback guidelines and municipal codes in Burlington, Gridley, and Emporia. Because split rail provides an open visibility ratio exceeding 75%, it is universally approved for front yard property lines and corner lot sight triangles where solid privacy fences are restricted. Kansas 811 utility markings are verified before drilling. Kraft Fencing carries full commercial liability insurance.

Kansas Communities Served for Split Rail Fence

Our Gridley-based crews provide on-site consultations, underground Kansas 811 utility mark coordination, and complete split rail fence across East-Central Kansas:

Coffey County, KS: Our home county: John Redmond Reservoir, Coffey County Lake (Wolf Creek's cooling lake) and Neosho River bottoms mean many fence lines sit on wet, flood-prone ground.
Burlington, KS: Coffey County seat on the Neosho River just below John Redmond Dam; older homes on low ground near the river need posts set for wet soils.
Yates Center, KS: Woodson County seat with a historic courthouse square; aging homes in town and surrounding cattle pasture mean wood privacy repairs inside town and barbed-wire rebuilds outside.
Lebo, KS: Lebo, just off I-35 in northern Coffey County near Melvern Lake, has commuter homes plus farmsteads where split-rail and chain-link line the highway frontage.
Madison, KS: Madison, at the Greenwood County line west of Gridley, is gateway Flint Hills ranch country where pipe fence, barbed wire and corral work dominate.
Olpe, KS: Olpe, south of Emporia on K-99, is surrounded by row-crop and cattle ground; farmstead pens and livestock lots drive woven-wire and pipe fence work.
LeRoy, KS: LeRoy sits in a Neosho River bend southeast of Gridley; small-town lots back onto cropland, so chain-link and woven-wire pet and garden fences are common.
New Strawn, KS: New Strawn was built after the old Strawn townsite was flooded for John Redmond Reservoir; its newer homes sit near Coffey County Lake and Wolf Creek.
Hartford, KS: Hartford borders the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge at John Redmond's upper end; refuge-edge farms need deer-resistant garden fence and flood-ready posts.
Neosho Rapids, KS: Neosho Rapids sits on the Neosho River between Emporia and Hartford; river-bottom farms see flood debris load fences, so H-braces and steel posts hold up best.

“Casey and Roman Kraft did a cedar fence rebuild for my wife and I in December of '25. Our original fence was over 20 years old and in bad need of replacement. Casey came to my house on a Sunday to measure the property and discuss our plans. He got us the bid that evening. His price was extremely competitive and his reviews online were stellar. The days Kraft Fencing committed to build were the 2 rainiest days in December. There were flash flood warnings posted on both of those days and still, Casey and Roman showed up and went to work. I felt bad but they had top notch rain gear and smiles on their faces. They and their crew showed up at 7:30am both days and just got after the job. The craftsmanship is very impressive. They use screws instead of nails, the posts are beefier than the standard 4x4 post, and they use clear cedar in all the wood work except for the posts. The most impressive thing we experiened with Casey and his company was how he and his crew responded to a mistake that was made. He listened to our concern, gave us a few options to rectify the mistake, made sure both my wife and I would be happy with the work around, and then went about his business and made it right (without any additional charge). What a fantastic business he runs and what an ethical guy he is. I give him a 10/10 recommendation if you are looking to get a new fence installed. Brendan H. Great price”

“Kraft fencing did a great job installing our aluminum fence. It was a big job and a difficult yard to fence, as there were multiple changes in elevation. However, the fence looks great, and it was completed quickly. 10/10 recommend”
